I started dancing tango in 2002 in Washington, DC. I took classes with several instructors and learned something different from each of them.
In April 2004, I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina to learn tango "at the source". It was a very exciting trip, but I stopped dancing for a year following the trip to Buenos Aires. I was overwhelmed with everything that I did not know and believed could not do. This was sad, especially for the five pairs of tango shoes that I had just purchased. A friend said to me "well, Lois, what are you going to do with all those tango shoes, wear them to the supermarket?"
A year later, in April 2005, I was walking to work and passed a Turkish restaurant called Meze in Adams Morgan. There was a "tango lesson" sign outside which used to mock me every morning on my way to work.
Finally, in June, I decided to walk in and take a lesson. That was a changing point in my life. I loved the place and have been dancing ever since.
I now instruct beginner tango with my partner Dennis Sadler.
